PhaseMAXX - 50T  Rotary Phase Convertors can be supplied for (240v 1 phase input / 240v 3 phase output), (480v 1 phase input / 480v 3 phase output), or (600v 1 phase input / 600v 3 phase output).

Where the load operating voltage is not the same as the supply voltage, a transformer must be connected to the phase convertor, - either on the convertor input or output side. Several advantages and disadvantages exist for placement of the transformer in either connection manner.

When a transformer is placed on the phase convertor output side, the transformer can be a 3 phase auto-transformer sized to supply the total 3 phase load current. As well, the phase convertor must have a TLC Option installed (see Options Section) to disconnect the transformer from the supply voltage when ever the convertor is not operating. One advantage to this connection arrangement, is that the convertor will have two different output voltages. For example, if the load operating voltage requirement is 460v, and a 230/460v 3 phase auto-transformer is connected to the converter output side, then both 230v 3 phase (on the transformer line side) and 460v 3 phase (on the transformer load side) are available for operation of multiple motors operating at either 230 or 460v. As well, 3 phase auto-transformers are readily available in any size. Applications where the phase convertor is in a reasonable proximity to the Utility supply service (eg: same building), will make use of this connection method.

When a transformer is placed on the phase convertor input side, the transformer must be a 1 phase transformer sized to supply the total 3 phase load current  multiplied by 1.73. However, the TC Option is not required, and only one 3 phase output voltage is available  -  that which equals the transformer output supply. This type of transformer connection is widely used for irrigation pivots (where the convertor is located a great distance from the supply voltage). Larger single phase transformers are quite often not readily available at most electrical wholesalers.
