Auto-Transformer phase converters deliver full rated HP,
and can be adjusted to provide current balance at a fixed load. These high efficiency
Phase Converters automatically limit inrush currents to three times the normal single
phase amperage. They are ideally suited for 460v three phase applications, and are
supplied standard as 240v or 480v 1 phase input / 480v 3 phase output. - External step up
transformers are not required.
Auto-Transformer Phase Converters - models suffix "24" are
supplied as 240v 1 phase input / 480v 3 phase output.
Models suffix "24" are supplied in NEMA 3 enclosures and are
primarily intended for oil well pumping motors. These converters are a complete power
system which includes main breaker, auto-transformer, load magnetic starter and overload
protection, H/O/A selector, provision for pressure switch, and surge suppresser.
The ASC converters have one additional feature for use with pumps. Most
larger submersible or centrifugal pumps are operated from "soft-start" magnetic
starters, used in part to reduce stress on mechanical components during the motor's start
cycle. Motors connected to an ASC converter require "full-voltage" magnetic
starters (not expensive soft-start devices), because the ASC has adjustment for lowering
the starting torque developed by the motor. This same feature applies to any motor
connected to the ASC (not just pump motors). Reduction of shock loading is an important
feature for larger electric motors and should not be overlooked. Purchase an ASC - and
save the price difference between the soft-start starter you might normally buy and
that of an across-the-line starter.
